Job Title: Director of Early Childhood

Reports to: Head of School

Nature and Scope:

The Lerner School Preschool is seeking a highly qualified, energetic, self-motivated individual to lead its very successful and growing, early childhood program. Currently, our program, which runs from 8:00 AM-6:00 PM Monday-Friday, serves 82 children, ages 2 to 5 years old.  The preschool program has 11 employees.  Any candidate for this position should possess creativity, flexibility, strong management skills, and a passion for Jewish education.  The Lerner Preschool proudly offers a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum which places a deep emphasis on the individual needs of each child and provides an education that is rich in Jewish values, customs, rituals and celebrations.  The Early Childhood Director is a full-time, 12-month position that is supervised by the Head of School.  The Director will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the program which includes implementing policy, developing curriculum, managing budget and personnel, and maintaining standards required for licensing and accreditation.

The Early Childhood Director must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or Child Development (Master’s preferred)
  • Level I Administrator Credential or above; Level III Administrator credential preferred
  • Strong knowledge and experience with licensing standards of the NCDCDEE (North Carolina Department of Child Development and Early Education) and the ITER-S and ECER-S accreditation processes
  • At least 3 years of early childhood administrative experience in a licensed child care center (5+ years preferred)
  • At least 3 years of classroom teaching experience in a licensed child care center
  • Pass a full background check
  • Be proficient with Word, Excel, Gmail, and Google Suite and able to learn other programs quickly

  • Commitment to the importance of Jewish education and strong knowledge regarding Jewish traditions and age-appropriate Jewish curriculum
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability to plan and juggle multiple duties, including classroom coverage, when needed
  • Ability to support staff, resolve conflicts, and be a strong team player and team builder
  • A hands-on, hard worker, who leads by example


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Create Programmatic Excellence

  • Manage the daily operations of the program in accordance with state licensing standards, both year round and summer camp program
  • Oversee enrollment and classroom placement
  • Supervise staff in curriculum planning and implementation
  • Uphold and develop program policies and procedures
  • Review and edit employee and family handbooks annually
  • Maintain accurate student files
  • Meet regularly with Head of School and attend and contribute to leadership team meetings with fellow administrators
  • Supervise emergency preparedness training and drills in conjunction with fellow administrative staff
  • Work with school administrators (HoS, Admissions Director, Development Director) to develop appropriate partnerships, create marketing strategies and outreach efforts, and maintain a positive relationship with the community


Human Resource Management

  • Recruit, interview, manage, and supervise early childhood faculty
  • Conduct staff orientations and lead regular staff meetings and training sessions
  • Maintain accurate personnel files
  • Conduct classroom observations and complete faculty performance reviews
  • Oversee classroom and faculty scheduling to ensure proper coverage throughout the day
  • Plan and implement and/or locate in-service trainings to ensure annual faculty requirements are met


Financial Oversight

  • Manage the program budget
  • Purchase supplies, equipment, and food while operating within its guidelines


Foster Family Engagement

  • Create and maintain successful methods of communication for families regarding classroom activities and preschool programming
  • Develop, plan and implement activities for families, including initial parent orientation
  • Cultivate and maintain solid parent relationships through responsive, proactive communication
