Job Title: Director of Finance

Reports to: Head of School

Nature and Scope:

The Lerner Jewish Community Day School, a SAIS-accredited school in Durham, NC, seeks a Finance and Operations Director. The position will work collaboratively with the Head of School to steward the robust business, operations, and financial functions of the school. The Director of Finance and Operations reports to the Head of School (HOS) and will work closely with both the HOS and the Board of Trustees.

Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Accounting & Finance:

  • Maintain complete and accurate accounting records using QuickBooks and GAAP, and provide regular updates to Head of School (HOS) and Treasurer on the financial state of the school
  • Lead budgeting process and long-term financial modeling in conjunction with HOS and assist Head of School & Finance Committee in setting tuition & developing tuition setting strategy
  • Provide external auditors and accountants with required accounting data
  • Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable
  • Work with staff department leaders to track departmental spending and maintain oversight
  • Support Board of Trustees by attending board and committee meetings, generating accurate financial reports and projections, and advising the Board and HOS on financial matters

Business Operations & Management:

  • Maintain Human Resource Records and fully manage payroll process start to finish using an online database
  • Keep financial documents in order and easily accessible; implement and maintain electronic file redundancy system (via secure digital methods as well as hard copy paper versions when required by law or unavailable by other means)
  • Work with Head of School and Admissions Director to track student recruitment, enrollment and retention markers, and generate enrollment projections
  • Manage and oversee Financial Aid process, enrollment contracts, and supplemental program billing
  • Manage and oversee benefits package for Faculty and Staff in conjunction with HOS, including retirement plan, insurance options, and paid-time-off
  • Handle all matters regarding employment including preparing contracts, on-boarding and dismissal of personnel, and maintaining employee handbooks
  • Advise school leadership on best practices with regards to DOL, FLSA, and FMLA
  • Create and review all vendor and partnership contracts organization-wide, negotiate terms of service, regularly assess quality of services received and price/quality ratio
  • Capital planning, including capital budget monitoring and updates, depreciation and amortization
  • Advise HOS on major business decisions
  • Oversee all general facilities matters & large scale facilities projects
  • Supervise Facilities manager and custodial staff
  • Primary POC with IT contractors


Required technical skills 


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics, or related field
  • Strong demonstrated technological skills including:
    • Microsoft Office (Word & Excel)
    • Google Suite (Mail, Calendar, and Drive)
    • Intuit QuickBooks (or similar accounting software) – experienced user
  • Strong experience managing financial records, accounting and budget processes.
  • Experience managing benefit programs and working with outsourced vendors for payroll and benefit programs
  • Experience supervising staff & handling conflict


  • Five or more years as manager/director in a finance function
  • Experience with non-profit accounting
  • Experience with private school operations
  • CPA, MBA, or advanced degree in business or related field
