Student Programs

The Lerner School offers a variety of student programs to support student leadership and community engagement.

Student Council

Student Council is comprised of 4th and 5th Grade students elected by their classmates and peers. In the fall, students campaign with posters and campaign speeches to 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders. Student Council leaders work together with a staff advisor to create activities for the Lerner student body. Past Student Council activities include:

  • Talent Show
  • Bake Sale, where proceeds go to a designated charity
  • School Spirit Day during Purim
  • Student Survey

Talent Show

Our talented Elementary students celebrate their unique abilities at the annual Lerner School Talent Show, sponsored by the Student Council. Children from Kindergarten through 5th Grade sing songs, perform magic tricks, play musical instruments, perform dances, recite poetry, jump rope, and more.

Book Buddies

4th and 5th Graders pair with Preschool and Kindergarten students each week for our “Book Buddies” program, where the older students read to and mentor their younger friends.

The children develop strong connections with each other, and the older students develop their leadership skills to help nurture a strong, vibrant school community.

Jump Rope for Heart & Hoops for Heart

Each year, the entire school looks forward to Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. In anticipation of this day, our P.E. teacher instructs children, from Preschool through Grade 5, to learn how to live a heart healthy lifestyle. This campaign is combined with a tzedakah project to raise funds for heart disease research. For more information, please contact our P.E. Teacher,

Cat McAuley at cat@lernerschool.org.

Field Trips

Elementary students in each grade participate in a variety of field trips that blends with units of study. Some of the students’ favorite field trips include visits to the Nasher Museum in 1st Grade, Duke Homestead in 2nd Grade, the Morehead Planetarium in 3rd Grade, the Carolina Tiger Rescue in 4th Grade, and the Triangle Training Center in 5th Grade. The 5th Grade experience culminates in a 3-day trip to Washington, DC.

After School Programs & Clubs

Our students are invited to participate in a variety of After School activities and clubs for an additional fee.
